History of the Denomination
The Christian
Reformed Churches of Australia has its roots in the great
European Reformation. The Christian Reformed Churches
of Australia were established by Dutch migrants in 1951.
Since then the small group of believers have grown to an
active membership of just under ten thousand people in some
forty five churches spread throughout the nation.
We have been
instrumental in the establishment of many parent controlled
Christian schools, we have our own theological college with
five full time professors, and we are actively engaged in
missions, both within Australia and beyond. In all
this we seek to be true to our calling as God's people
living in the world.
Our only rule
for faith and life are the Scriptures of the Old and the New
Testaments. To aid us in our understanding of the
beautiful truths of the Bible we have subordinate standards:
The Three
Creeds
The
Apostle's Creed
The Nicene Creed
The
Athanasian Creed
The Four
Confessions
The Belgic
Confession of Faith The Heidelberg Catechism The
Westminster Confession The Canons of Dort
The Bible
The Bible is a
book about God, and from God. It contains every thing which
we need to know to have a personal and eternal relationship
with God.
The Bible was
not written by a single lone hermit in a cave long ago.
Rather, over a 1600 year period God spoke to various people
and inspired them to write various portions. Each portion is
commonly called a book. The Bible can easily be described as
a library of books.
Christians
believe that the Bible is "God breathed." Therefore, the
Bible is not simply the teachings of wise men in times long
ago. Rather, it is the creator of the universe making
himself known to each one of us.
The Christian
Reformed Church, along with other Protestant denominations,
accept the 39 books of the Old Testament and the 27 books of
the New Testament as the complete record of God's dealings
with humanity and his creation.
